CHICAGO - The UIC volleyball team (3-2) posted its second straight victory with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-9) sweep of Morgan State (0-5) on Friday evening at the UIC Invitational inside the Flames Athletic Center.

In each of the first two sets, the score was tied at 21-21 before UIC would take control of the game. Freshman Morgan Mereday sparked the Flames with six kills on 11 attempts in the second set. Tied at 6-6 in the set, Mereday scored five of the next eight points to give the Flames a 14-8 advantage. The Flames never trailed in the third set, quickly jumping out to a 10-2 lead and cruising to the 25-9 win. Casey Harris was perfect with four kills on four attempts in the set.

Stephenee Yancy and Mereday each posted a team-high nine kills. Nicole Johnson recorded 34 assists and four service aces, while Alyssa Ehrhardt (14) and Bridget Powell (13) each recorded double digit digs.

In the Invitational opener, the Flames defeated Central Connecticut State (3-1) in straight sets, 3-0 (25-22, 25-21, 25-17). In that match, Alyssa Ehrhardt set a season high with 16 kills and four service aces. As a team the Flames recorded a season-high 10 aces. Johnson also tallied 40 assists, her fourth straight game with at least 40 helpers.

The Flames return to action on Saturday at 4 p.m. CT against Chicago State in the finale of the UIC Invitational.
