CHICAGO - Despite a furious fourth period rally the Flames (9-9, 0-7 HL) came up short dropping a 69-64 decision to Youngstown State (13-4, 4-2 HL) at the UIC Pavilion. The loss was the seventh straight for UIC and eighth in their last nine games.
UIC took their only lead of the game at 2-0 before Youngstown ran out to a 7-2 advantage and maintained that pace throughout the first period. The Flames found themselves trailing 35-29 at the half only to see the deficit increase to as many as 15 points in the third period.
"We have been constantly playing from behind during the entire month of January and it takes a lot more energy when you are always playing from behind," said head coach Regina Miller.
Ruvanna Campbell (16 points, 15 rebounds) paced three players in double figures while recording her 11th double-double on the season. Caitlin Garant added 13 points and Melita Emanuel-Carr also chipped in 13 points off the bench. Imani Moore scored eight points, pulled down a career-high 14 rebounds (12 defensive) and matched her career best with seven assists in the loss.
The Flames held Youngstown scoreless for over four minutes in the fourth period, closing the gap to four points at 63-59, but were unable to get over the hump. UIC shot 2-17 from three-point range and 14-22 from the charity stripe.
"It's about free throws and layups," said head coach Regina Miller. These are the little things that change the complexity of the game." "We had opportunities down the stretch tonight to make plays but couldn't make a shot."
