CHICAGO - Redshirt junior Kendyl Nunn scored a career-high 25 points and redshirt senior Ruvanna Campbell added a team-high 29 points but despite their efforts, the UIC women's basketball team (9-6, 0-4 HL) was unable to hold off the lethal attack of the Detroit Titans (7-8, 3-1 HL) Saturday afternoon at the UIC Pavilion as it dropped an 89-80 decision.
Nunn's 25 points came off a career-best 10 field goals as she also brought down a team-high 11 rebounds. Campbell came one point shy of matching her career-high 30 points, set last season against Valparaiso, and had nine caroms to come within three of claiming UIC's all-time rebound leader title. Marissa Grossfeld also reached double figures for the Flames for the first time this season on 4-of-7 shooting.
Detroit jumped ahead in the first quarter as it went on a 13-2 run over a span of 2:17 to gain a 15-6 advantage. UIC worked back and created a run of its own, scoring an unanswered seven points in the final minutes poured in by Campbell, Nunn and Imani Moore to pull within four, 22-18.
The opening minute of the second quarter brought on 10 combined points with the Flames narrowing the Titans lead to 26-24 before Campbell hit a jumper to tie the game at 26-all. Detroit regained its lead and went ahead 36-29, but UIC turned out an 11-2 spurt that was capped with a buzzer-beating three from Grossfeld to head into the locker room with its first lead of the game at 40-38.
The Titans came back to open the second half and established an eight-point edge, 54-46, with five minutes remaining following three of their 11 treys in the game. The Flames were able to answer and tie the game at 54-54 over the next three minutes with four points each from Campbell and Nunn. Detroit reclaimed the lead and capped the quarter at 63-60.
UIC gained the scoring upper hand to open the final frame as it scored 11 points to Detroit's six to take its largest lead of 71-68 with five minutes left to play. The Titans took over as they opened a 7-3 run as they hit seven of their last eight field goals and sunk five free throws in the final minute of play to take the win.
UIC will head to Wisconsin for its next two games as it makes a stop in Milwaukee to take on the Panthers on Thursday (Jan. 14) at 7 p.m. CT at the Klotsche Center before heading to Green Bay to face the Phoenix on Saturday (Jan. 16) at 1 p.m. inside the Kress Center.
