Final Results
EVANSTON, Ill. – The UIC women's tennis team capped its stint at Northwestern's Wildcat Invite on Sunday afternoon after three days of competition at the Vandy Christie and Combe Tennis Centers. The Flames collected 10 victories during the tournament with five each in doubles and singles.
Miranda Rodriguez Diaz de Leon put up five of the victories with two in singles and three in doubles while paired with
Oana Manole.
Rachel Le Comber,
Bianca Zuzu and
Stefana Vasic added to the total in singles, with Le Comber, Vasic,
Melika LeBlanc and
Georgie Sanders picking up the remaining wins in doubles.
UIC went without a win during the first day of doubles before coming back on day two. Rodriguez Diaz de Leon and Manole held their own on the consolation side of the B Draw as they first defeated a combo team of Iowa's Aimee Tarun and Pittsburgh's Natsumi Okamoto, 6-3, and then took down Wisconsin's Michelle Linden and Melissa Pick, 6-1. Positioned in the championship of the consolation bracket, the Flames duo ousted Eastern Michigan's Anna Veleva and Alejandra Barcelo Almoyna, 6-1, for the title.
The Flames garnered two more doubles wins in matches played outside of the brackets. Le Comber and Vasic claimed a 6-4 victory over Linden and Pick, while LeBlanc and Sanders took hold of a hard-fought 7-5 final against Notre Dame's Jeannie Nash and Hayden Siegfried.
The lone win in singles during Friday's competition came for Rodriguez Diaz de Leon, as she captured a straight-set 6-1, 6-4 win over Okamoto. UIC did not compete in singles on Saturday before it returned to the courts Sunday.
On the final day of action, the Flames played outside of the brackets to take four singles wins. Rodriguez Diaz de Leon won her second match of the weekend in a 6-3, 6-2 decision against Northwestern's Nina Van Oost, as Le Comber bested Okamoto, 6-4, 6-2, in straight sets.
Zuzu endured three sets that featured the tiebreaker before she came out on top of Siegfried, 6-1, 6-7 (3), 1-0 (6). The final win came in dominating fashion as Vasic blanked Notre Dame's Kema Tuchscherer, 6-0, 6-0.
UIC will take a break from competition as it prepared to compete at the USTA/ITA Midwest Regionals, Oct. 20-24, on the campus of Michigan State in East Lansing, Mich.
