Rochester, Mich. - A stellar performance by redshirt senior Ruvanna Campbell was not enough as the Flames (12-12, 3-10 HL) dropped a 78-73 decision at Oakland (14-10, 6-7 HL) on Saturday afternoon. UIC split the Michigan portion of their schedule going 1-1 on the trip.
The sub-zero temperatures outside followed UIC into the O'rena as Oakland quickly jumped out to a 7-0 lead to start the game. UIC battled back using a 12-6 run down the stretch to get within one point at 19-18 to end the period. The Flames found themselves down by as many as nine points in period before Ruvanna Campbell heated up for the Flames.
Campbell scored a career-high 32 points on 13-of-20 shooting and pulled down 19 rebounds for her seventh straight double-double and 17th of the season. Over her last seven games Campbell is averaging 21.3 points and 15 boards.
The second period was a duplicate of the first as the Flames were outscored 8-1 to open the stanza. Following a timeout UIC caught fire again using an 8-0 run as Taylor Toney scored four points along with two steals to close the deficit to 29-27. However the Flames went scoreless over the final 3:01 and trailed 33-27 at the half.
To start the second half, Campbell scored 10 of the team's first 16 points to give UIC its only lead of the game at 45-43 with 3:46 remaining in the third quarter. Oakland responded with an 11-0 run to take a 54-45 lead that would extend to as much as 12 points in the fourth period. The Flames attempted a late push getting as close as three points on consecutive triples by Brittany Byrd, but Oakland held on for the win.
UIC Assists: Ruvanna Campbell needs 97 rebounds to become the all-time leader in Horizon League history … Campbell shot 13-20 for the game, the rest of the team went a combined 13-50 from the floor … the Flames are 10-4 in day games and 3-5 in games decided by five points or less.
