CHICAGO - UIC won its second straight game behind the strong pitching performance of Ian Lewandowski on Friday afternoon at Curtis Granderson Stadium. It was the Flames first shutout of the season.
Lewandowski (2-0) retired eight in a row to start the game and 11 of the first 13 batters faced. He allowed just two hits over 7.0 scoreless IP, a double in the third and a single in the fifth inning. After the single in the fifth, the right-hander retired nine straight before turning it over to the bullpen where Brandon Gibis and Noah Masa each tossed 1.0 scoreless IP in relief.
In the ninth inning Chicago State put the first two runners on base with back-to-back singles, but was erased on a 6-4-3 double play. It was the 15th double play turned by UIC which leads the Horizon League and ranks 16th in the country.
The Flames produced RBI singles from David Cronin, Ricardo Ramirez and Cody Bohanek. Cronin (1-3, RBI) and Ramirez (1-3, RBI) extended their hitting streaks to eight and seven games respectively. Bohanek (1-1, RBI, 2 BB) continued his assault on the base paths having reached base safely in 13 straight games.
UIC will continue the home and home series tomorrow afternoon with a doubleheader at Chicago State. Lefty Jake Dahlberg (1-2, 8.50 ERA) toes the rubber for UIC in game one at noon CT. The game two starter is to be determined. The Flames return to Curtis Granderson Stadium for the finale on Sunday with a 12:05 pm CT first pitch.
