NILES, Ohio -- UIC and Youngstown State nearly made it through six innings of baseball Friday before the rain moved in and forced a suspension until Saturday morning. When the contest resumed the Penguins tacked on three more runs to secure a 9-1 victory
The start of Friday's series opener was moved up two and a half hours in an effort to beat the unplayable conditions, however, the teams were unable to come to a conclusion before the skies opened up.
The Penguins jumped out to a 5-0 lead Friday before UIC finally dented the scoreboard in the top of the sixth inning. Conor Philbin got the line moving with a two-out double to right field. On the very next pitch Brandon Gibis hammered an offering to right-center field, bringing Philbin home and making the score 5-1 in favor of Youngstown State.
The home team added another tally in the bottom of the frame before the field was cleared at 4:09 p.m. CDT. When the game resumed Saturday, Lorenzo Arcuri was on second base with two outs for YSU. Freshman Charlie Cerny had just come on in relief for the Flames, spelling starting pitcher Ian Lewandowski. Arcuri scored and YSU added two more runs, one in the seventh and one in the eighth, to pick up its first Horizon League win of the season.
Gibis and second baseman David Cronin collected two hits apiece for UIC. Cronin also added one of two stolen bases for the Flames.
The second game of the series will also be played Saturday.
