Highland Heights, Ky. - The Flames (12-16, 4-2 HL) extended their win streak to three games after downing Northern Kentucky, 4-1, Friday afternoon in the Bill Aker Complex. Right-hander Connor Ryan allowed one run on five hits over 6.1 IP improving his record to 2-0 on the season.
Ryan retired the first eight batters in succession and 11 of 12 through 4.2 IP before Northern Kentucky collected its first hit. The right-hander induced 11 ground ball and two fly ball outs with five strikeouts, not allowing a Northern Kentucky runner to reach second base until the sixth inning when they plated their only run of the game.
UIC got struck first with a two-out RBI single off the bat of Brandon Gibis in the third inning. The Flames added to their lead with single runs in the fifth, seventh and eighth innings. Second baseman David Cronin doubled and drove in two runs in a 1-4 outing to extend his hitting streak to 10 games and his streak of reaching base to 22 games. Outfielder Scott Ota continued to swing a hot bat, going 3-4 with two doubles, a triple, RBI and two runs scored. Over his last three games, Ota is 6-7 with three doubles, two triples, four RBI and four runs scored.
Senior Trevor Lane pitched the final 2.2 innings to record his first save of the season. Lane struck out six of the 10 batters he faced.
The Flames return to action on Saturday afternoon against Northern Kentucky at noon CST. UIC will send left-hander Jake Dahlberg (3-4, 5.48 ERA) to the bump in game two of the three-game series.
