CHICAGO – The Flames (24-27, 15-11 HL) awakened from their slumber and used the long ball in their 11-1 win against Wright State on Friday afternoon in front of 785 fans including students from several area Chicago Public Schools.
Left-hander Jake Dahlberg (6-7) held Wright State hitless through 5.1 IP despite allowing an unearned run in the third. On the afternoon Dahlberg walked six and struck out five for his second straight win. Austin Smith pitched the final 3.2 innings for his first save. The two combined to no-hit Wright State through seven innings before Mitch Roman ended the bid with a single to start the eighth inning.
Leading 2-1 in the seventh UIC sent 12 men to the plate scoring nine times, matching a season-best for runs in a single inning. The Flames produced five consecutive hits highlighted by a three-run home run off the bat of Gabe Dwyer and two batters later a two-run shot from Rob Calabrese.
The 11-run output is the most for the Flames since scoring 10 runs on April 16 vs. Milwaukee and the three hits are the fewest allowed since March 20 vs. Oakland when Connor Ryan and Trevor Lane combined on a one-hit shutout.
In the series finale, right-hander Connor Ryan (2-1, 3.06 ERA) takes the ball in the rubber match as UIC wraps up the regular season tomorrow afternoon with a 12:05 pm start. Following the contest the Flames will recognize seniors Ian Lewandowski, Trevor Lane, Conor Philbin and Tommy Field.
