CHICAGO - Senior day is supposed to be a day of celebration unfortunately the Flames dropped a 12-5 decision to Wright State on Saturday afternoon to conclude the Horizon League regular season. After the game UIC recognized seniors Tommy Field, Trevor Lane, Conor Philbin and Ian Lewandowski for their hard work and dedication.
From the start the Flames found themselves in a sizeable hole. Wright State pounced quickly with four runs in the first inning. Connor Ryan took the loss, his second of the season, allowing four runs (three earned) in 0.1 IP as the right-hander was unable to find his rhythm. On the afternoon UIC pitching issued eight walks and surrendered three home runs.
The Flames cut the deficit in half at 4-2 with two runs in the second inning on an RBI ground out from Rob Calabrese after Gabe Dwyer led off the inning with a double. Josh Gere slashed a triple into the right field corner and scored on Cody Bohanek's RBI single up the middle. Bohanek went 2-4 and finished with a career-high three RBI.
Wright State responded with five runs in the fourth inning and three more in the seventh to extend the lead to 12-2. UIC added a single run in the seventh and two in the bottom of the ninth but it wasn't enough.
UIC ends the regular season with a 24-28 mark (15-12 in conference) heading into the Horizon League Tournament hosted by Wright State. The Flames enter as the #4 seed and will play fifth seed Oakland University on Wednesday, May 25 at 11:00 am CST. in Fairborn, Ohio.
