MASON, Ohio – The UIC women's tennis team wrapped up its time at the Greater Cincinnati Invitational on Saturday after two days of competition at the Lindner Family Tennis Center.
The Flames combined for five total wins after facing opponents from nine different Division I programs.
Bianca Zuzu and
Stefana Vasic led the squad after winning both of their first two singles matches.
Rachel Le Comber garnered the other victory off an opening-round win.
Le Comber picked up her first match in the third draw after going to the tiebreaker in her first set with a 7-6 (5), 6-0 defeat over Valparaiso's Paige Heuer. In the next round, it was Saint Francis' Laura Gutierrez to take the 6-4, 7-5 win.
While positioned in the fourth draw, Zuzu came out with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Belmont's Suzanna Stapler to open it up and then ousted Evansville's Theodora Soldatou, 6-2, 6-4, before she came up short in the semifinals to Bowling Green's Anna Kholodnaya, 6-2, 6-4.
Vasic competed in the fifth draw and took a 6-2, 6-4 win against Duquesne's Tyre Abdalla, 6-2, 6-4, before coming out on top of three sets versus Bowling Green's Emily Witt, 4=6, 6=3, 10-3. She took her final match to three sets but could not hang on as Saint Francis' Stephanie Miller took the 4-6, 6-4, 10-8 decision.
Melika LeBlanc and
Georgie Sanders additionally competed over the weekend in the first and second draws, respectively, but were defeated by their opponents.
The lone doubles match had Le Comber and Sanders in the first draw, but they were blanked in a 6-0 final to Duquesne's Julianne Herman and Kylie Isaacs.
UIC will return to Chicago and get set for their Flames Invitational on Friday (Sept. 23) and Saturday (Sept. 24) at the Flames Outdoor Tennis Courts.
