Final Results
CHICAGO – The UIC women's tennis team concluded its Flames Invitational by winning every match played Saturday at the Flames Outdoor Tennis Courts. The eight victories on the day brought the Flames total to 23 for the tournament.
Rachel Le Comber and
Georgie Sanders led UIC during the two-day competition as they did not lose a single match, picking up six total victories and the championship in their respective singles draws.
Doubles play rounded out with three wins for the Flames, capping the weekend with seven total in doubles. Le Comber and
Stefana Vasic blanked Cardinal Stritch's Livia Hollosy and Volcy Boilevin, 6-0, and
Melika LeBlanc and Sanders took down Valparaiso's Kathleen Hebble and Paige Heuer, 6-4, giving both pairs a perfect 3-0 record during competition.
Bianca Zuzu and
Miranda Rodriguez Diaz de Leon additionally chalked up a win with a 6-4 defeat over Valpo's Meg Modesto and Jordan Kopfer.
The Blue Flight had a pair of Flames in the championship final, with Sanders and LeBlanc going head-to-head. After going ahead 6-2 in the first set, Sanders won by retirement.
Le Comber came out on top in the Red Flight to take the title after posting a 6-3, 7-6 (3) win against CSU's Luise Gruber. Rodriguez Diaz de Leon additionally finished the tournament with a victory after defeating Heuer, 6-0, 6-1.
Originally scheduled for Vasic and Zuzu to square off in the final of the Flames Flight, the pair broke apart to face different opponents. Vasic took out Valpo's Morgan Paras, 6-1, 6-0, to post a perfect weekend, while Zuzu blanked her third opponent of the tournament with a 6-0, 6-0 win against Kopfer.
The Flames are back in action next weekend (Sept. 30 – Oct. 2) for three days of action at the Wildcat Invite, hosted by Northwestern in Evanston, Ill.
