Saavedra & Hansen Lead UIC at Bradley Pink Classic

UIC closed regular season at on Newman Golf Course Friday

PEORIA, Ill. -- UIC's men's and women's cross country teams traveled downstate to Peoria, Ill., on Friday afternoon to participate in the their final races of the regular season at the Bradley Pink Classic at Newman Golf Course. The meet featured 32 Division I teams, including 20 that are regionally ranked, and more than 1,000 runners.

Men's Results
  • Walmer Saavedra led the UIC in the men's red race, which covered 8K. The sophomore traversed the course in a personal-best 25:27.0. Saavedra, who finished went under 26 minutes for the second time this season and bested his previous time by more than 15 seconds.
  • Saavedra placed 32nd in a field of 217 runners.
  • Juniors Nathan Mroz and Zach Szczesniak came in crossed the line in close proximity. Mroz ran the race in 26:01.0, while Szczesniak went 26:07.4. For Mroz, it was his quickest 8K of the season, and his best since the 2015 Horizon League Championship (25:20.3). Both were in the top 80 finishers at 71st and 79th, respectively.
  • Sophomore Tom Brennan's time of 26:23.0 helped him finish 89th. It was the fastest time at 8K that he has run this fall.
  • As a team, the Flames finished 15th out of 28 Division I teams. UIC's average time of 26:08.3 helped it top Horizon League foes such as Milwaukee (26:23.9) and Green Bay (28:42.0). IUPUI landed one spot ahead of the Flames in 26:02.0, while Oakland finished seventh overall in 25:26.4.
  • Iowa, ranked sixth in the Midwest region, won the men's red race with a time of 25:03.1 and Hawkeye Nathan Mylenek was the top individual, finishing in 24:26.2.
Women's Results
  • Allison Hansen, the top finisher in three of UIC's first four races, came through again in the 6K on Friday. The junior got home in 22:19.5, her best time this fall.
  • Hansen placed 69th out of 247 runners.
  • Sophomore Ai Kaisho continued a strong season by finishing just outside the top 100 at 104th in a personal-best time of 22:45.7. it was the first time in her young career that Kaisho went under 23 minutes at the 6K distance.
  • Senior Michelle Borycki also turned in a sub-23 minute time of 22:58.7, the fastest of her UIC career.
  • The Flames finished 25th out of 31 teams with an average time of 23:08.5. Among the Horizon League teams in the field, UIC topped Green Bay (24:53.1) and finished just seven seconds in back of Milwaukee (23:01.3). Oakland placed eighth in 21:48.0 and League newcomer IUPUI ran 16th (22:38.1).
  • South Dakota, ranked eighth in the Midwest region, won the women's red race in 21:32.09. Lindsey Brewis of Loyola Chicago was the top individual in 20:36.3.
Open Results
  • Brixton Rill and Alex Bashqawi, both redshirting this season, ran unattached in the men's open 8K race. Rill finished fourth in 25:06.9, a time that would have put him in the top 20 of the red race.
  • Bashqawi was close behind Rill, finishing in 26:06.3.
  • Mitchael Demantopulos also participated and clocked in at 29:48.5.

  • The Flames will turn their attention toward the Horizon League Championships, which will be run on Saturday, Oct. 28.
  • The meet will be held on the Katke-Cousins Golf Course on the campus of Oakland University.
