Naperville, Ill. - The men and women's track & field squads wrapped up the weekend event with a positive showing at the Chicagoland Championships hosted by North Central College. The men finished seventh and the women in eighth place in the competition that featured 19 teams for each gender.
Women:
In their season debut, the women's distance medley relay of Sarah Poulos, Brittany Schwarz, Sahian Lopez and Natalie Jaramillo took second place with a time of 12:58.16. The 4x4 relay team of Mia Cruz-Bastian, Paige Crawford, Roma Siddiqui and Sarah Poulos posted a season best of 4:01.96 and a fifth place finish.
"Both relays should be ready to compete come conference," said head coach
Gabe Rivera.
The 3k race saw Lizzie Deutsch cross in third place with a time of 10:30.08 and Mia Cruz-Bastian turned in her fastest time of the season and placed fifth overall in the 400m with a time of 59.24.
In the long jump, Ariel Gibbs took third place with a mark of 5.45, her best jump of the season.
Men:
Maciej Markiewicz placed fourth overall with a personal best of 8.44 in the 60m hurdles.
"Maciej has been working on his speed in between the hurdles and it seemed to have started to pay off," said Rivera.
Jordan Munar also finished with a personal best of 22.48 in the 200m, while
Alex Bashqawi secured an eighth place finish with a time of 8:40.32 in the competitive field of the 3k event.
In the field events,
Shaun Wollenweber (14.73 m) and
Larnell Brown (14.56 m) took second and third place respectively in the triple jump. In the weight throw,
Laith Kanan just missed a personal record but still finished fourth with a throw of 16.32m.
"As we are gearing up for conference, we experimented in a few events for a few athletes," said Rivera. "We saw a few things that we think we can carry over into some of our strategizing for conference."
The Flames return to action Saturday, Feb. 18 at the Panther Tune-up in Milwaukee, Wis. Events begin at 10 a.m.
