Schumacher-Cawley Steps Down as Head Volleyball Coach

Served as UIC head coach for past eight seasons

CHICAGO – UIC Director of Athletics Jim Schmidt announced on Thursday, Feb. 23, that Katie Schumacher-Cawley has stepped down as the head volleyball coach after eight seasons to accept the head coaching position at the University of Pennsylvania.

"We're thankful for the dedication and leadership that Katie has given to those who have been a part of the volleyball program here at UIC," said Schmidt. "We wish her and her great family all the best as they begin the next chapter and challenge in their lives."

"Words cannot express the proper amount of gratitude that I have for the opportunity I was afforded at UIC," said Schumacher-Cawley. "Over the past 14 years, I have developed countless relationships with student-athletes, fellow coaches, and administrators that will be carried on for the rest of my life. Thank you to Athletic Director Jim Schmidt, the passionate alums, dedicated support staff, and everyone who has touched this program in a positive way. Each person has made a significant impact on my life, both on and off the court, and I will truly miss everyone."

Schumacher-Cawley has served the UIC volleyball program overall for the past 14 seasons. After working as an assistant coach for six seasons, she was named head volleyball coach on December 5, 2008. In eight seasons at the helm for the Flames, Schumacher-Cawley amassed 113 victories. In 2016, the Flames achieved the best start in program history as they rattled off 10 consecutive wins to open the year with non-conference tournament titles at SEMO, Jacksonville and DePaul.

She coached two-time Horizon League Player of the Year Stephanee Yancy, along with 11 All-Horizon League selections and three All-Newcomer Team honorees. The Chicago, Ill., native played a significant role in mentoring numerous UIC career record holders, including: Yancy (hitting percentage), Katie Kozak (assists), Maggie Strus (digs) and Lana Lobdell (total blocks and block assists).

The search for Schumacher-Cawley's replacement will begin immediately, according to Schmidt.
