Indianapolis, Ind. - The Flames track and field teams took to the outdoor surface for the first time this spring and posted some promising results in the Stan Lyons Invitational at Butler University. It was a very cold day and despite the conditions, the men's team came ready to compete and took home the top spot in the meet.
"I am pleased with the performances and commitment to competition our athletes displayed this afternoon despite the chilly conditions," said
Gabe Rivera, head coach. "The weather conditions did not affect our athlete's mental focus, they were all excited and ready to get the outdoor season underway."
The men captured first place finishes in the 4 x 100 meter relay, 400 meter hurdles, 200 meters, discus, shot put and triple jump. The Flames also collected second place in the 100 meters and 3000 meter events. The 4 x 100 relay team of
Jordan Munar,
Emmanuel Onoh,
Dan Hinspeter and
Shaun Wollenweber blazed through the competition in a time of 42.90. Munar also won the 200 meter (22.05) and finished second in the 100 meter race (10.97). In the 400 meter hurdles, Jakob Mogorovic crossed the line with a time of 58.22 to earn top honors. Distance runner
Alex Bashqawi took home second place in the 3000 meters.
UIC dominated the afternoon field events,
Favio Nunez posted his first collegiate victory in the discus with a throw of 41.60 meters, while teammate Lath Kanan finished third with a toss of 40.25 meters.
Luke Taccola won the shot put event with a toss of 14.03 meters edging out fellow Flame
Christian Saporiti (13.93 meters) and in the triple jump,
Shaun Wollenweber captured the title (14.61 meters) while
Larnell Brown (14.11 meters) took second place.
On the women's side, Alimot Lawal leapt to a third place finish in the long jump with a mark of 4.90 meters and a fourth place finish in the 100 meter dash, crossing the line in 12.74 seconds. Paige Crawford placed fourth in the 400 meter hurdles (1:08.24) while Janeka Stokes (25.88 meters) and Genora Garcia (28.08 meters) also produced fourth place finishes in the javelin and discus.
The Flames will resume competition next Saturday at the Edmonds Invitational in Rensselear, Ind.
