UIC Visits NIU Tuesday afternoon

Flames defeated Huskies at Granderson Stadium on March 28

CHICAGO -- UIC will play a game outside the friendly confines of Granderson Stadium for the first time since March 21 on Tuesday, April 11, when it ventures to DeKalb, Ill., where it will take on the Northern Illinois Huskies in a nonconference game. First pitch is scheduled for 3:05 p.m. CT.

The Flames (20-8, 10-2 Horizon League) have reached 20 wins through only 28 games as they have become the fastest team to reach 20 victories in program history since the 2002 squad accomplished the feat. Led by the Horizon League Player of the Year, Curtis Granderson, that group won a school-record 39 games.

The 20th win of the season, which came as the Flames scored a season-high 14 runs against Oakland Sunday afternoon, was also significant in program history. It was the 1,500th in UIC Baseball program annals.

As a result of unplayable fields at Milwaukee and Oakland, UIC has played 11 consecutive games at Granderson Stadium, and 14 of the last 15. The Flames are 13-2 at home this season with one of those wins coming against the NIU Huskies on March 28. Rob Calabrese drove in two runs that afternoon, while Cody Bohanek and Thomas Norton each scored twice in a 6-1 triumph. On the mound, freshman Jacob Key was sensational as he spun 6.0 scoreless innings and scattered only four hits against the Huskies.

Key has been a boon to the UIC rotation in his first season of collegiate competition. The Murfreesboro, Tenn., native is 4-0 in seven appearances (five starts) with a team-best 1.38 ERA. His ERA ranks second among all Horizon League pitchers this season and his 24 hits surrendered are the fewest among those who qualify (minimum 1.0 IP per game).

Key is scheduled to be opposed Tuesday by NIU left-hander pitcher George Faue. Faue was the seventh of seven pitchers that faced the Flames in the first matchup on March 28. He allowed two hits in his one inning of work. Overall, Faue is 0-1 with a 4.81 ERA in 10 appearances. He is slated to make only his second start on Tuesday at McKinzie Field.
