Flames Soar at Marquette Duals

Milwaukee, Wis. – In their fifth outdoor meet of the season the UIC track and field teams soared to several victories at the Marquette Duals in Milwaukee.

The Flames endured cold and windy conditions to capture the men's 800 and 5000 meter races as well as the women's 5000 meter event.  The men's and women's distance crew led the way with Alex Bashqawi and Kyle Hauser running exceptional well in the 800m and 5000m.  Hauser took the top spot in the 800 meter with a time of 1:54.30 and Bashqawi finished third (1:54.84).  The two also ran in the 5000 meter event with Bashqawi (14:55.38) crossing the finish line in first place, Hauser was second with a mark of 14:57.18.

"Doubling in both races was not a simple task and our entire coaching staff is proud of their effort," said head coach Gabe Rivera.

For the women, Lizzie Deutsch and Michelle Borycki lead the charge in the 5000 meter race.  Deutsch (17:30.70) grabbed first place honors, followed by Borycki (18:14.62) in second place.  Ai Kaisho ran the event in a time of 18:39.22, good enough for a fifth place finish.  Deutsch and Borycki both posted personal bests with Lizzie improving her time by 11 seconds.

Other highlights from the event include a second place for Jordan Munar in the men's 200 meter (22.36) along with a third place finish in the 100 meter (11.02).  Maciej Markiewicz (15.43) garnered second place in the men's 110 hurdles, Sharod Ervin took third in the 400 meter (51.89) and the 4 x 100 meter relay team of Munar, Emmanuel Onoh, Martin Hunter and Shaun Wollenweber grabbed third place with a time of 41.75.

In the field events, Shaun Wollenweber extended his run of first place finishes in the triple jump with a leap of 14.65 meters.  Wollenweber has collected the top spot in five of his last six triple jump events.  Pole vaulter Pawel Klimek snared a third place finish with a mark of 4.30 meters.

The women produced a third place finish in the javelin as Carli Benson claimed the honor with a toss of 24.88 meters.  On the track the women posted fifth place finishes in the 100 meter (Alimot Lawal, 12.65), 200 meter (Basirat Iginla, 26.14) and 110 meter hurdles (Janine Fajardo, 16.23).  Mia Cruz-Bastian (26.66) and Teagan Hough (16.42) placed sixth in the 200 meter and 110 hurdles respectively.
