HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – For the second-consecutive match, the UIC women's tennis team (13-5, 4-1 HL) has to work back from dropping the doubles point as it was able to secure four singles matches to claim the 4-3 win over Northern Kentucky (5-9, 2-4 HL) Sunday at the Yeager Tennis Complex.
Â
It was the first time in eight matches that the Flames were held without a win in doubles. The Norse took the first match at No. 3 as
Georgie Sanders and
Stefana Vasic fell, 6-1.
Rachel Le Comber and
Melika LeBlanc then had their six-match win streak snapped when they dropped a 6-4 decision at No. 1, awarding the first point to NKU.
Â
The match at No. 2 featuring
Oana Manole and
Bianca Zuzu went unfinished.
Â
UIC headed into singles and came away with the first three matches to jump ahead 3-1. LeBlanc was victorious at No. 3 as she ousted Sydney Power, 6-2, 6-1, before
Miranda Rodriguez Diaz de Leon took her third straight with a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 6 against Sierra Nellessen. Le Comber then extended her win streak to six as she captured a 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 5 over Danielle Donahue.
Â
However, the Norse came back to tie the match up at 3-3 as Manole came up short at No. 1 in a 6-4, 6-2 final to Margita Sunjic and Sanders was defeated after battling to the tiebreaker in her second set against Klara Skopac, 6-0, 7-6 (7-4), at No. 2.
Â
With one more singles set to go, Zuzu took the match into her hands and quickly worked Katja Dijanezevic at No. 4 to collect the straight-set 6-4, 6-4 decisive win.
Â
The Flames will head into their final stretch of the regular season as they are set to host their remaining four matches at the Flames Outdoor Tennis Courts. UIC will first host Milwaukee at 10 a.m. CT Friday before returning Saturday to take on Green Bay at 10 a.m.
