Todd's Golden Goal Lifts Flames Past DePaul

Flames Delight Sellout Crowd with Win Over Crosstown Rivals

After falling behind 2-0 in the first half, UIC drew even with DePaul in the 79th minute on a penalty kick.  Later, in the second overtime, Max Todd sent a sharp drive past DePaul's keeper to give the Flames a 3-2 win in a heated intracity rivalry game.

Game Headlines
  • Flames Earn Chances in the Early Stages: Max Todd sent a long ball ahead for Jesus Perez, but DePaul's keeper beat Perez to the ball.  Then, in the 11th minute, a DePaul defender headed a cross away from danger in front of the goal.
  • DePaul Keeps Flames Off Scoreboard: UIC's two best scoring chances of the first half came in a three minute span beginning in the 33rd minute.  Abel Guzman created space and rifled a shot that hit the crossbar.  Shortly thereafter, Jose Fuentes saw an opening from the right wing and placed a shot on goal that forced Quentin Low to make a save.
  • Blue Demons Strike First: DePaul's first goal came when Ishtvan Wilhelms sent the ball ahead to Stijn van der Slot, who quickly fed a cross to Philipp Konigstein inside the box.  Konigstein took a low shot that beat Sawyer Jackman inside the left post.
  • Miscue Leads to UIC Goal: The Flames got on the board when a ball was sent in front of the DePaul goal, and Max de Bruijne tried to play it off his chest back to the keeper.  Instead, the ball took an off bounce and went into the net, cutting DePaul's lead in half.
  • Possession and Chances Tip in UIC's Favor: Two more opportunities came UIC's way.  Lyes Ghezali, making his first appearance as a Flame, got a clean look that Low made a play on in the 67th  minute.  Ten minutes later, Low topped his previous effort with an absolutely phenomenal save on a Cristian Sanchez shot that appeared destined for the net as it left his foot.
  • Guzman Scores on PK: With the Flames playing 10-on-9 thanks to double red cards, DePaul committed a foul in the box in the 79th minute.  That sent Abel Guzman to the spot, where he buried the penalty kick for his first goal of the season.

  • Teams Scoreless Early in OT: The Flames got some opportunities early in the first overtime, but sent their shots wide of the goal on numerous tries.  In the 96th minute, Sawyer Jackman made his best save of the game, robbing DePaul of a golden goal, and Guzman had a shot go just over the crossbar shortly after.
  • Todd Scores Golden Goal: UIC, playing a man up, was the aggressor as the second overtime wore on.  Their persistence paid off when Max Todd found himself in space, dribbled toward the goal, and laced a shot from the arc across a diving Low to the right post.

Facts and Figures
  • Five yellow cards were issued.  DePaul's Nico Cardona was shown two on separate occasions and sent off in the 78th minute.  Jose Fuentes and Max Todd were shown cards for the Flames.
  • Cristian Sanchez and Michael Mojarro were at the center of a physical incident in the 79th minute.  They each earned a red card as players from both teams swarmed them after hard contact and an apparent shove.
  • UIC doubled up DePaul in shots, 20-10, and attempted 12 more shots than the Blue Demons from the second half on.
  • In fact, UIC put more shots on goal (11) than DePaul attempted overall (10).
  • Both goalkeepers went the full 105:31.  Sawyer Jackman got his first win in the fire engine red and navy blue, while Quentin Low took the loss.
  • The penalty kick was the first that Guzman attempted in his career.  UIC's senior captain was iced as several DePaul players including their keeper jockeyed for position, but Guzman proved to be completely calm as he converted the try.
  • UIC took 13 corner kicks and on at least two occasions were an eyelash from scoring on the set piece.  DePaul was awarded just two corners.
  • Guzman, who came on in the 30th minute as a sub, led all players with six shots.  Todd took three, and four Flames had two each.
  • An overflow, standing room only crowd of 1,043 braved an intermittent light rain in the second half and provided the Flames with vocal, spirited support the whole match.
