Flames Settle For Draw in Preseason Opener

UIC Outshoots Western Illinois, 12-5

UIC scored first, but Western Illinois got even late, and the teams played to a 1-1 draw at Flames Field in an exhibition match Monday evening.  Jesus Perez was the goal scorer for the Flames, who took advantage of the preseason contest to give no fewer than 20 players some time on the pitch.  No overtime was played.

First Half Headlines
  • Markell Saddler gave the Flames their first glimpse of an offensive threat.  He had two chances in the first 20 minutes, but was unable to generate a shot.
  • Oscar Gonzalez took the mantle as the game's first half hour drew to a close.  He fired three shots, each a better threat than the last, requiring two saves by Western's Tim Trilk to keep the match scoreless.
  • In minute 37, the Flames got on the board.  Gonzalez set up Jesus Perez in the center of the field, and the latter blasted a shot to the upper right corner to make the score 1-0.
  • Keeping up the pressure, UIC registered two more quality shots in the 41st minute.  Western's back line was up to the task with a block on Gonzalez' next offering and another of Trilk's four first half saves thwarting Saddler's attempt.
Second Half Headlines
  • The Flames had two chances in the Western Illinois box in the beginning stages of the second half.  Gonzalez unleashed a shot which was blocked, and Perez was on the spot to turn the rebound into another shot which was also blocked.
  • The Leathernecks' best opportunity to date came in the 59th minute.  Paul Kirdorf had space on a restart to send a dangerous ball toward Sokratis Vasilas' net, and only the crossbar kept the visitors off the scoreboard.
  • Substituting liberally in the second half, Flames boss Sean Phillips sent four reserves on in the 64th minute, and two more later; in addition to the five new faces who started the half.
  • Western Illinois scored their goal on a low shot through traffic which eluded Vasilas.  Kirdorf found Jamison Kozar, whose grounder struck paydirt.
  • Two more chances materialized for UIC.  Alwin Seitz put a corner kick on net resulting in a yellow card for Peter Becht when he contacted the keeper.  Later, on a restart, the Flames were offside when the ball was struck toward backup Leatherneck keeper Tim Hansen.
Facts and Figures
  • UIC had the majority of the shots, taking 12 to WIU's five.  Seven of the Flames' attempts went on net versus three of the visitors'.
  • Vasilas played the entire 90 minutes in goal.  He made two saves.
  • The Flames took all five of the contest's corner kicks.
  • Phillips got a workout for his starters and a good look at his newcomers.  Twenty players saw action, and only one played more than 64 minutes.
  • Oscar Gonzalez paced the team with five shots.  Jesus Perez attempted three.
Up Next
  • The Flames will close the exhibition season with a match Saturday night.
  • The contest will take place at the site of UIC's NCAA tournament match last season, in Madison against Wisconsin.
