Flames Defeat Campbell to Open Season

Sanchez' First Collegiate Goal Sparks Comeback

UIC got a season-opening win over Campell in the SMU Tournament in Dallas Friday night.  All the scoring came in the first half, as the Flames answered a seventh-minute Camel goal with scores from Cristian Sanchez and Max Todd, and held on for the 2-1 win.

How It Happened
  • The Flames took the first shot just 49 seconds in when Max Todd forced a save by Samuel Lechuga.  But Campbell immediately took control, sending a header wide of the net and earning two corner kicks in quick succession.  The second of the two was tapped in from the doorstep by Gideon Betz.
  • UIC drew level in the 17th minute.  Cristian Sanchez took a pass from Oscar Gonzalez in the top of the box and rifled a shot past Lechuga for his first goal as a Flame.
  • Max Todd made it 2-1 at the 34th minute.  Jesus Perez set him up for a shot from just inside the 18, and he sent it into the top right corner.  Within four minutes, Todd logged his third shot on goal in as many attempts.
  • The second half began with continued Flames pressure.  Josiah Ash and Perez each put a shot on goal within the first seven minutes.  Lechuga made sure that neither got into the net.
  • Sawyer Jackman was called on to make one save in the early stages of the second half, but the Flames' back line allowed the Camels just one shot in the last 27 minutes, and that went wide.
  • UIC had a trio of corner kicks in rapid succession starting in the 73rd minute, but were unable to manufacture a quality attempt off of any of them.  Later, the Flames had three chances at shots, but the attempts by Gonzalez, Markell Saddler, and Perez all missed the frame.
Facts and Figures
  • The Flames' First XI included 10 players with starting experience and one new face.  Freshman Alwin Seitz made his first start.
  • Two of Seitz' classmates got their feet wet early.  Josiah Ash entered in the 26th minute, and Pau Mateo came on a couple minutes later.  Later in the first half, Jake Nunez saw his first action after redshirting last season.
  • Cristian Crespo became the fifth Flame to make his debut, replacing Todd late in the first half.
  • Sanchez' first goal came in his 40th game in a Flames uniform.  The durable defender had taken 23 shots before cashing in the early equalizer.
  • Todd took a team high five shots, putting three on goal.  Ash was behind him with three attempts.
  • Seven of UIC's first eight shots went on goal.  They finished with a shot on goal percentage of .467.
  • Phillips made sure to keep his troops fresh in the 99 degree heat.  Liberal substituting ensured that only two field players logged 90 minutes.
  • Campbell took six of the match's first eight shots, but UIC ended up with a 15-10 advantage.  That included a 10-4 ledger in the second half.
  • Both teams had four corners.  All of Campbell's came in the first half, and all of UIC's in the second.
  • The Camels were whistled for 11 fouls; the Flames only two.
