Jesus Perez scored two goals and
Markell Saddler had two assists as UIC dominated the match from start to finish and earned a 4-0 win over IUPUI Saturday night at Flames Field. A seventh-minute goal from
Oscar Gonzalez gave the Flames (6-1, 2-0 HL) all the offense they would need, and the home team went on to outshoot the Jaguars (1-3-2, 1-1 HL) 22-3.
How it Happened
- The Flames' offense was precise from the opening kick. Markell Saddler sent a pass to Oscar Gonzalez in a perfect spot to uncork a shot from the top of the box, sent low past keeper Quinn McCallion inside the left post.
- UIC continued to have the better of play, earning two corner kicks in succession and putting Max Todd in position to fire a long range shot toward the Jaguar net. Just after that sequence, Markell Saddler sent a beautiful cross to the face of the goal, where Perez arrived on a committed run and headed the serve into the net.
- IUPUI managed just one shot in the first 45 minutes. It was easily sent away from the area by the Flames' back line, which frustrated the Jaguars all night.
- UIC continued to apply pressure and was rewarded with quality chances as the second half unfolded. Nestor Garcia corralled a loose ball at the top of the circle and had room to take a quality shot which stayed high. Alwin Seitz worked deep and sent a promising bender toward the far post, but it stayed just outside.
- In the 78th minute, the Flames earned a corner kick. As it traveled toward the box, IUPUI was whistled for a foul. Josiah Ash walked to the spot and buried the penalty kick to make the score 3-0. It was the Flames' first conversion of a PK this season.
- Several Flames got the opportunity to take the pitch as the final dozen minutes waned. Mike Jimenez, David Gorniak, Jordan Moore, and Jonathan Sanchez all made their first appearance of the season.
- Perez finished the scoring with another nice run in the 79th minute. Seitz sent the ball to him on the far side of the six, where he scored his second goal of the match.
