CHICAGO – The UIC women's basketball team (0-1) continues its three-game road series to start the 2019-20 season, facing a pair of Big 12 opponents in Kansas (1-0) and Kansas State (1-0). The Flames will make their first stop in Lawrence, Kan. to face the Jayhawks on Sunday, Nov. 10 at 1 p.m. CT before wrapping up the trip in Manhattan, Kan. with a game against the Wildcats on Monday, Nov. 11 at 6:30 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT
- UIC was handed a 61-50 loss on Thursday in its season premiere at Purdue Fort Wayne.
- The Flames fought back from a 21-point deficit at the half to come within five, but the Mastodons followed with seven unanswered points to put the game out of reach
- After shooting just 6.3 percent in the first half, the Flames finished shooting 32.7 percent (17-for-52) overall, with a 22.2 percent (4-for-18) mark from beyond the arc. The Flames also made 66.7 percent (12-for-18) of their shots from the charity stripe.
NNEJI'S BLOCK PARTY
- Nneji finished the 2018-19 season with 70 stops, good for second-most in single-season history and 29th in the nation. Nneji began
- the 2019-20 season already ranked eighth all-time at UIC in career blocks, owning 86 total blocks with two years of eligibility remaining.
- The junior was up to her old tricks on Thursday in the season opener, leading the team in scoring (17 pts) as well as rebounding (8), while also making three stops.
KEEPING UP WITH KANSAS
- The Jayhawks are off to a 1-0 start in 2019-20 after an 84-72 win over Indiana State at home on Thursday night.
- Kansas had four players score in double digits in the win, freshman Holly Kersgieter (24), freshman Zakiyah Franklin (16), senior Mariane De Carvalho (15) and sophomore Brooklyn Mitchell (11).
- Kansas shot 52.8 percent (28-53) from the field and made 57.1 percent (24-42) of its free throws in the win.
- Kansas will serve as UIC's first Big 12 opponent since 2001, when the Flames faced Baylor.
- Kansas has the 2-0 advantage all-time against the Flames, but the two teams have not met in nearly 30 years, last facing off in December of 1992.
KEEPING UP WITH K-STATE
- Kansas State opened up its season on Thursday night with a 73-48 win over Omaha.
- K-State put up 50 rebounds and made eight blocks in the victory, shooting 40.9 percent, while keeping Omaha to just 29 percent from the field.
- The Wildcats had two players reach double figures in Elena Pilakouta (11 pts) and Kia Wilson (10 pts).
- Wilson also led the squad with nine rebounds.
- The Flames have won both prior meetings between the two teams, who last faced one another in December of 1992.
