CHICAGO -- The third weekend of the regular season will send the UIC Flames to SIUE for a truncated two-game series. Originally set to play four games, the Flames and Cougars will only meet for a doubleheader on Friday, March 1 at the Simmons Complex in Edwardsville, Ill.
Game one on Friday will begin at 2 p.m. CT. The two teams will play one nine-inning game and one seven-inning affair. The forecast on Saturday and Sunday has rendered it difficult to play games on those days.
UIC (1-5) is coming off its first win of the season on Sunday, Feb. 24 at Texas A&M. The Flames trailed 2-0, but scored the game's final seven runs from the sixth inning on to overcome the Aggies and win, 7-2.
Scott Ota hit the go-ahead two-run home run in the top of the sixth. Redshirt senior
Joey Fredrickson threw a career-high 8.0 IP in the victory. He scattered five hits and surrendered two runs, but once UIC got the lead, Fredrickson retired nine TAMU hitters in order to preserve the lead before turning it over to
Alex Padilla for the ninth inning. For his effort, Fredrickson was named the
Horizon League Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 25.
Fredrickson is scheduled to start one of the two games at SIUE. Junior
Jacob Key will also start on Friday. Last time out at Texas A&M, Key made his first quality start of the season by allowing one earned run over 6.2 IP.
SIUE (1-5) also opened the season with two road trips and it will be playing at the Simmons Complex for the first time in 2019 on Friday. The Cougars picked up their first win of the campaign by thumping Louisiana Monroe in the second game of a doubleheader on Feb. 24, 12-4. SIUE is batting .227 as a club and scoring 4.5 runs per game. On the mound, the staff has a 6.98 ERA through six games and opponents are batting .267 against the Cougars.
SIUE is slated to send a pair of underclassmen to the mound to start both ends of the twinbill in sophomore RHP
Collin Baumgartner (0-2, 10.61 ERA) and LHP
Cameron Prayer (0-0, 5.40 ERA).
