INDIANAPOLIS -- UIC starting pitcher Joey Fredrickson has been named the Horizon League Pitcher of the Week, the conference announced on Monday, Feb. 25. It is Fredrickson's first career accolade from the League.

The Tinley Park, Ill., native toed the rubber to start the series finale at Southeastern Conference foe Texas A&M on Sunday, Feb. 24. Fredrickson made his first career quality start as he threw a career-high 8.0 IP, in which he scattered five hits. Only of those, a leadoff home run to start the game, went for extra bases as he surrendered just two runs. The right-hander struck out one did not walk an Aggie. After UIC took a 3-2 lead in the top of the sixth inning on Sunday, Fredrickson retired the next nine TAMU hitters in order to protect the lead before turning the ball over to Alex Padilla in a non-save situation in the bottom of the ninth with the Flames in front, 7-2. It would be UIC's first win of the young season and the third against an SEC opponent since 2017.

Fredrickson's effort on the mound was one of three strong showings by UIC starting pitchers at Texas A&M. Jacob Key also made a quality start by allowing one earned run over 6.2 IP on Friday night as the Aggies hit just .148 against the junior from Tennessee. Patrick Martin made his first start in a Flames uniform on Saturday afternoon. The Arlington Heights, Ill., native gave up one run over 5.0 IP, while fanning four Aggies.

The Flames (1-5) were slated to make their home debut on Tuesday afternoon against Roosevelt, but the game has been canceled as a result of the frigid temperatures and chance of light snow in the forecast. UIC will next play a four-game series at SIUE (1-4) March 1-3.
