CHICAGO – The UIC women's basketball team (3-20, 1-11 HL) will wrap up its weekend at home on Sunday, Feb. 10, as they set to face off with Youngstown State (17-6, 9-3 HL). The Flames and Penguins are set to meet at noon CT inside the Credit Union 1 Arena.
Starting Five
- Kienya Jones is looking to stay hot on offense for UIC after tallying her second double-double of the season on Friday against Cleveland State. The senior led the team with 14 points while also matching her career high with 11 rebounds.
- Kiarra Thompson pulled in her fifth double-digit performance of the season on Friday, reeling in 11 points against the Vikings. The sophomore is second on the squad in both points (143) and makes (48), and is UIC's second-most efficient shooter beyond the arc, making 22.5 of her shots from downtown.
- Catera Etheridge was also in double figures on Friday against the Vikings, contributing a season-high 10 points while also handing out three assists.
- Jasmine Gaines leads the Flames in assists after dishing out a personal-best five helpers on Friday. The freshman averages 1.4 assists per game while also averaging 3.1 points per game for the offense.
- The Flames rank second in the League in three-point field goal defense, containing opponents to just 28.7 shooting from downtown. UIC has kept the opposition under 35 percent from three-point range in 16 of its 23 contests this year. UIC's opponents have shot above 40 percent from three just three times, vs. Miami (45 percent), vs. Northern Kentucky (45 percent) and at Northern Kentucky (40.9 percent).
What's at Stake
With a win, UIC would:
- Win its fourth game of the season
- Snap a seven-game losing streak vs. Youngstown State
- Capture its second Horizon League Win
- Surpass last year's Horizon League win total
- Improve to 3-7 at home
Penguin Points
- Youngstown State is in third in the Horizon League standings with a 9-2 record, sitting just below Wright State and Green Bay.
- The Penguins have the second-best scoring offense in the League, averaging 69.7 points per game. Youngstown State is also runner-up in scoring defense, allowing just 56.2 points per game. The Penguins are the top shooting team in the League, making 42.2 percent of their shots from the field.
- Mary Dunn leads the offensive front, averaging 13.4 points per game to rank fifth in the Horizon League. She is followed by teammates Sarah Cash (13.0 ppg) in seventh and Alison Smolinski (12.9 ppg) in eighth. Chelsea Olson leads the Penguins in rebounds with a 7.0 rebounds per game average, and she also pulls in an average of 10.4 points per game to round out the offense.
- The Penguins have just a one-game advantage all-time, 20-19, after winning the last seven meetings between the two teams.
