INDIANAPOLIS -- UIC starting pitcher
Jacob Key was selected as the Horizon League Pitcher of the Week for the week ending March 10, the conference announced on Tuesday.
The junior threw his second consecutive complete game, this one a full nine innings, to help the Flames take down Chicago State in the home opener on Friday. He scattered six hits and did not allow an earned run as the Flames cruised to a 5-1 victory. Key struck out six Cougars and did not walk a batter as he used only 92 pitches in the triumph. Not only did Key not issue a base on balls on Friday, he has an active streak of 24.0 consecutive innings pitched without walking a batter. That spans three starts and 0.2 IP at Georgia Tech on opening day.
The Murfreesboro, Tenn., native leads the conference in innings pitched (28.0) and ranks fourth with 22 strikeouts. His three walks allowed on the season are the fewest by any pitcher with at least 7.0 IP this spring.
Key, a 2018 All-Horizon League Second Team selection, is the second UIC pitcher to claim this award this season.
Joey Fredrickson picked up the accolade on Feb. 25 after he held the high-powered Texas A&M Aggies in check over a career-high 8.0 IP on Feb. 24. He made a quality start and allowed two runs on five hits without a walk. After UIC took a 3-2 lead in the top of the sixth inning of the series finale, Fredrickson retired the next nine TAMU hitters in order to protect the lead and preserve the first win of the season.
