CHICAGO – The UIC women's tennis team (17-4, 7-0 HL) will close out the regular season on the road this weekend, facing defending Horizon League Champion Youngstown State (4-18, 1-6 HL) as well as Cleveland State (14-7, 7-0 HL). The Flames will battle the Penguins on Friday, April 19 at 2 p.m. CT and finish the weekend on Saturday, April 20 at 1 p.m. against the Vikings.
The Flames haven't lost a match since Feb. 8, taking their last 15 matches consecutively. Last weekend UIC closed out the home slate with a 7-0 sweep of Green Bay and a 5-2 take down of Milwaukee to remain a perfect 7-0 against Horizon League opponents. A third-straight regular season title is on the line for the Flames this weekend, as well as the possibility for the team's most wins since the 2009-10 season.
Senior
Rachel Le Comber is on a 13-match win streak, leading the Flames with 14 wins overall in the dual season. Le Comber clinched her 78th career win on Sunday against the Panthers, placing her into a tie for seventh all-time alongside former Flame
Jacki Farr.
Le Comber and sophomore
Lucie Prochazkova both boast a perfect 7-0 record against conference opponents in singles, while senior
Georgie Sanders follows closely with a 6-1 mark. As a team, UIC owns an eye-popping 36-6 record in singles against Horizon League foes.
In doubles, the Flames are 33-20 overall against their opponents with a 12-5 record in conference play.
Lejla Colic and Prochazkova are 4-1 in Horizon League action, while the tandems of Le Comber and
Karyna Bihel as well as Sanders and
Viktoria Seifert own identical 4-2 marks.
The Penguins are 1-6 this year against Horizon League teams, dropping their last six in-a-row after winning their conference opener against Green Bay. Youngstown State came up just short last weekend, falling 4-3 to both Northern Kentucky and Wright State. The Flames and the Penguins last met in last season's Horizon League Championship match, where Youngstown State came away with a 4-0 victory to win its fifth-straight Championship title.
Cleveland State is the only other remaining undefeated team in the League, winning its last nine matches consecutively. Last weekend, the Vikings brought down Northern Kentucky by a final tally of 4-3 before finishing off the Raiders from Wright State, 6-1. UIC and Cleveland State also met in last year's regular season finale, where the Flames took a 7-0 sweep to claim their second-straight regular season title.
This weekend's matches will determine seeding in next weekend's Horizon League Tournament. The Flames have already clinched one of the top two seeds and a first-round bye into the semifinals, which are set to get under way on Saturday, April 27.
