STREETSBORO, Ohio – The UIC women's tennis team (17-5, 7-1 HL) was handed its first Horizon League loss of the season in hard-fought battle against Youngstown State (5-18, 2-6 HL) on Friday. The Flames were edged out for the doubles point and put up a fight in singles, allowing just one match to be finished in straight sets.
Doubles Highlights
Lejla Colic and
Lucie Prochazkova were bested by Youngstown State's Imaan Hassim and Tamara Teufl in the No. 1 match, 6-4.
Karyna Bihel and
Rachel Le Comber came up just short in the No. 2 match, falling 7-6 (5) to Lucia Zagar and Elvira Esteo, putting the doubles point down in favor of Youngstown State. The No. 3 match between UIC's
Georgia Gulin and
Viktoria Seifert and YSU's Cassandra Moraleja and Lisa Khamassi went unfinished.
Singles Highlights
Teufl extended the Penguins' lead with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Bihel at No. 2 for the only straight-set win of the day. Seifert got the Flames on the board with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-0 win at No. 6, but Khamassi outlasted Prochazkova at No. 3, 2-6, 7-6 (3), 6-3 to put Youngstown State one away from the clinch. Le Comber bounced back after dropping set one to take a 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 win over Lucia Zagar at No. 5, but Moraleja bested
Georgie Sanders in three sets at No. 4, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 to secure the win for YSU. Colic grabbed the last point for the Flames with a 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (10-8) win over Hassim at No. 1. Le Comber's win at No. 5 now puts her in sole possession of the No. 7 spot all-time, owning 79 career victories.
