UIC shut out Cincinnati, 1-0, in exhibition action Thursday evening. The Flames logged their second win in less than 48 hours without allowing a goal in either match.
"We are all very pleased with tonight's performance against a very good Cincy team," head coach
Tom Anagnost said. "We hung in and played tough and I am very proud of them. We all need a day off to recover both physically and mentally and then get back after it on Saturday."
An early goal held up as the game's only tally. With just 5:03 elapsed,
Autumn Rasmussen beat Madison Less and the Flames capitalized yet again on momentum generated from kickoff.
The Flames scored their first, and ultimately game-winning, goal at the 7:43 mark of Tuesday's win over Southern Illinois. Unlike that match, however, UIC was largely held in check by a physical Bearcats squad. They managed just five shots the entire match, and outside of the goal did not put any of them on target.
After an evenly played first half, the hosts - perhaps buoyed by the fresh legs of a legion of substitutes - increased their intensity in the second half. They outshot UIC 9-1 in the last 45 minutes.
Lena Kurz extended her shutout streak to 180 minutes by saving all five shots that threatened her net.
The Flames knew that conditioning would be of the utmost importance during this two-game stretch which included a road trip. With just three players entering from Anagnost's bench, the team was up to the task.
UIC played two exhibitions for the third time in program history, and went 2-0 for the first time. The Flames have a week off before the regular season begins against Central Michigan on August 22 at Flames Field.
