INDIANAPOLIS – Freshman Kristian Young of the UIC women's basketball team has been named the Horizon League Freshman of the Week for the period of Dec. 14-20, the conference office announced on Monday. Young picks up the first weekly award of her career and the second for the Flames in the last three weeks.

Young earned the Horizon League weekly title after averaging 10.5 points and 5.0 rebounds with five steals and 11 assists in UIC's two-game series with Detroit Mercy this weekend. The freshman shot 6-for-12 overall on the weekend and was 2-for-4 beyond the arc and was instrumental in helping the Flames secure their first Horizon League win on Saturday.

With the clock winding down in overtime, UIC fought back from a 68-64 deficit, firing off an 8-0 run that culminated in a three from Young that would put the Flames up for good. Young ended the day with 10 points, three rebounds, four assists and two steals as UIC went on to win it, 76-72.

On Sunday against the Titans, Young was back in full force, tallying 11 points, seven rebounds with three steals and a personal-best seven assists. Her seven assists ties for the most by a single player in a game this season.

Young and the rest of the Flames will have a brief break in action before returning in the new year to face Horizon League newcomer Purdue Fort Wayne on the road Jan. 1-2.
