Redbird Invitational Will Close Fall Season

Flames Will Be In Action All Weekend at Illinois State

10/7/2021 9:29:00 PM

UIC will compete in the Redbird Invitational this weekend, closing out their fall competition calendar.

The invitational, held at Illinois State from Friday through Sunday, will give the entire lineup a chance to compete before the team goes into training mode for the dual match season.

Pelle Strandberg and Ammar Wazir will look to build on encouraging performances.  Strandberg rallied from a set down to win his #1 singles match, while Wazir won his first collegiate dual singles match, in the Flames' match against Grand Valley State last week.

Theo Duclos and Gustavo Schwebel each went to a third set in singles play against the Lakers, but were unable to pull out a win in the decisive set.

A competitive field awaits UIC.  Along with the hosts, local and regional squads including DePaul, Marquette, Eastern Illinois, Drake, Bellarmine, and Saint Louis will be at the invitational.  The tournament will be played in a Davis Cup format in three flights, with each entrant playing a doubles and a singles match each of the three days.

All doubles matches will be played as eight-game pro sets.  Friday's singles matches will utilize a 10-point tiebreaker in lieu of a third set; while singles matches on Saturday and Sunday will be three full sets.

Play begins at 1:00 p.m. Friday and 10:00 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.
