CHICAGO – Fresh off their fourth-straight regular season title, the UIC women's tennis team (17-5, 9-1 HL) will be heading to West Lafayette, Ind. this weekend for the Horizon League Women's Tennis Championships. The top-seeded Flames are slated to face off with No. 4 seed Cleveland State (8-11, 6-6 HL) in the Semifinals on Saturday, May 1 at 8 a.m. CT.
The Flames finished out the regular season last weekend with a pair of 7-0 shutout victories over Oakland to secure the team's fourth-straight regular season title. Junior
Ana Jover clinched both wins for UIC in the No. 4 match and was awarded the Horizon League's Singles Player of the Week honor for her efforts.
The Horizon League debuted its postseason awards on Thursday, and the Flames were well represented, earning more awards than any other team in the conference. Head coach
Shannon Tully picked up the 12th Horizon League Coach of the Year Award of her career,
Lucie Prochazkova earned the Herb Foster Sportsmanship Award and four Flames picked up All-League honors, with Prochazkova and
Agnes Gustafsson taking home First Team honors and Jover and
Tamara Malazonia earning Second Team honors.
UIC finished the regular season with a 97-34 record in singles matches against their opponents, with a staggering 49-11 mark in Horizon League matches. Jover, Gustafsson and
Georgia Gulin all finished with identical 9-1 conference records in singles, while Prochazkova earned a perfect 8-0 record against conference foes.
In doubles, the Flames finished the season 38-15 overall against their opponents, with a 17-6 doubles record coming against Horizon League opponents. Jover matched her singles record with an identical 9-1 record in Horizon League doubles matches to lead the squad, followed by a 6-1 Horizon League doubles record from Prochazkova.
Cleveland State came up short in its regular season finale, dropping a pair of 4-3 matches to Milwaukee last weekend on the Panthers' turf. The Flames were victorious in both regular season meetings between the two teams, winning the first match 4-3 before taking the finale by a 5-2 tally.
The winners of the two semifinal matches will advance to Sunday's (May 2) Championship match, which is scheduled for 10 a.m. CT. Should the Flames win on Saturday, they would face either No. 2 Youngstown State or No. 3 Milwaukee in the Championship.
