CHICAGO – UIC head golf coach Mat Blair announced the addition of Lia Thomas to the women's golf program for the upcoming 2021-22 academic year.

"We're really fortunate to get Lia into our program," said Blair. "She was a late bloomer after focusing on basketball to start her career, so anytime we can get those dual-sport athletes we're really lucky. I think her best golf is ahead of her. She has tremendous upside, is such a great kid and I think she will be wonderful for the Flames family. She embodies all the things we are looking for and are excited to see what the future holds for Lia."

A native of Michigan City, Indiana, Thomas joins the Flames following a standout prep career at Michigan City High School where she was the 2019 Duneland Athletic Conference MVP in addition to being a three-time All-Conference honoree. Thomas was also named the 2019 Northwest Indiana Times Player of the Year while being tabbed the Michigan City High School MVP all four years. Talented off the course as well, Thomas was recognized for her success in the classroom as a 2020 Academic All-State selection.

Thomas led her team in scoring all four years, helping the program to a sectional title in 2018 while becoming the first girl to qualify for state since the consolidation of the school system.

A multi-sport athlete, Thomas was also a member of the basketball and tennis programs at Michigan City High School.

UIC opens the 2021-21 season Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 13-14, at the Golfweek Collegiate Challenge in Pawley's Island, South Carolina.
