The Flames return home for the first time in over 11 days as they are set to host the Saint Thomas Tommies (2-2) to begin a short two-game homestand at the Credit Union 1 Arena Sunday.
The Flames find themselves facing an opponent in the Tommies that they haven't faced beforehand, making it the fourth straight game that they are playing a brand new opponent.. While the Flames managed to go 2-1 at the Hostilo Hoops Community Classic, the Tommies haven't seen the court since November 19
th in their 67-41 victory over Presbyterian at home.
Sitting at 5-1 overall, the Flames have a chance with a victory to have the best start to the season since the 2015-2016 season.
This weekend match-up is scheduled to tip-off at 2 pm and will be available to watch on ESPN+.
Top performers in Savannah
- After dropping their first game against Fairleigh Dickinson (63-51), the Flames bounced back with wins against both Davidson (63-55) and Austin Peay (62-59).
- Josie Filer led the team offensively at the event, averaging over 14 points a game and was named All-Team in the tournament.
- Ky Dempsey-Toney showed strong minutes coming off the bench, including landing a double-double (12 points, 10 rebounds) in the Flames' loss against Fairleigh Dickinson. It was her first double-double of her career.
- Kristian Young continues to contribute in other ways than just scoring. The guard averaged 4Â assists, 3.6 rebounds and 1.6 steals per game in the tournament.
- Sara Zabrecky had a strong game against Davidson going 5-for-9 from three and co-lead in scoring that game with 18. She is the Flames' leading shooter from the perimeter this season with a 40.7% shooting percentage.
A strong start
- Returning from Savannah at 5-1, the Flames have the same amount of wins they had combined in the last two seasons
- Head Coach Ashleen Bracey and her staff are tasked with their program only facing one more opponent for the first time after the Tommies when they take on Belmont, a fellow newcomer to the MVC.
- The Flames won three of their games by a single possession, with their most recent one being in their win over Austin Peay.
- Two of their single possession wins ended with the Flames battling on the defensive side to thwart any offensive momentum. The last win that this happened was in their 44-43 home opener against the Milwaukee Panthers back on November 16th.
Taking on the Tommies
- The Flames are tasked with taking on Tommies' leading scorer Jade Hill, who is averaging 15.5 PPG. The guard scored 24 points in their win against Presbyterian, currently a season high. Â
- Hill also leads the team in assists with four a game and three steals a game.
- Jordyn Glynn and Jordyn Lamker will be challenging the Flames on the boards as their lead rebounders. Glynn currently averages 4.8 rebounds a game and Lamker averages 4.5.
- As a team, the Tommies have showed strength when they are at the foul line. They've landed 73.3% Â of their free throws in their first four games.
