UIC women's basketball (2-23, 1-19 Horizon) wraps up the regular season on Saturday, Feb. 26, at 1 p.m. against the top-seeded Youngstown State Penguins (23-5, 17-4 Horizon). The Flames are coming off a close-knit 57-50 loss to Robert Morris. Youngstown State is coming off a 68-45 loss.Â
The last time these two teams faced off was back on Jan. 14 in Youngstown, Ohio. The Flames fell to the Penguins in that game, 69-46. Youngstown State center
Lilly Ritz had a career night against the Flames, scoring 21 points and grabbing 15 rebounds. UIC will look to slow down the Penguins star player, preventing her from getting touches in the paint.
In the Flames' last game against Robert Morris, the Flames were led by an incredible second-half effort by
Jaida McCloud, who put up 20 points in the final two quarters.
Kristian Young kept the Flames afloat in the first quarter of play, scoring six of the Flames' 12 points. Young also tied a career-high in rebounds with 12 against the Colonials. The Flames' effort was apparent, with the team showing tenacity on and off the bench. UIC will look to match that energy Saturday against Youngstown State.
Youngstown State has been a force in the Horizon League this season, ranking first overall in the standings. The Penguins are strong passers, averaging a league-leading 14.89 assists per contest.
Chelsea Olson is the catalyst for the Penguins offense, leading the Horizon in assists per game with 4.6 a game. The Flames will look to stop the Olson to Ritz connection in order to slow the Penguins' offense to a standstill.
Tip off is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 26, at Credit Union 1 Arena in Chicago. The Flames will be celebrating graduate student
Justice Gee after the game finshes. This will be the final regular-season contest of the season for UIC.
