Shorthanded Flames Defeat Western Kentucky

UIC Overcomes Default to Win Fifth Straight

UIC pulled out a 4-2 win over Western Kentucky Saturday, despite being down a key player on the singles courts.  The neutral site match took place in Indianapolis, where the teams are participating in a weekend-long round-robin along with host Butler.

The Flames won the doubles point with a pair of 6-4 wins, including by Ana Jover and Agnes Gustafsson.  Jover, who is undefeated in singles play in dual matches, was unable to compete in singles, forcing the bottom three players to move up a flight each.  Despite playing a higher level of competition, Lea Forste-Dinell came through with the clinching win on the #5 court.

Doubles Results
  • Tamara Malazonia and Dominka Hrabalova paired together for the first time ever on the #2 court.  They turned in a 6-3 win in their debut.
  • Jover and Gustafsson, a mainstay on the #1 court, also had a 6-4 win.
  • Marina Hermanny de Figueiredo and Lea Forste-Dinell played together for the second time in the last three matches.  They had a 4-3 lead at #3 when play was halted.
Singles Results
  • Hermanny de Figueiredo, slotted in the #5 spot the last four matches, moved up to #4, where she lost 6-0, 3-0 (retired).
  • Gustafsson earned her 10th win of the dual season with a 6-3, 7-5 triumph at #1.
  • Malazonia made the team score 3-1 in favor of UIC with a 7-5, 4-6, 6-1 win at #2.
  • Forste-Dinell had been finding her footing on the #6 court, but moved up to #5 against the Hilltoppers.  She came through with a 6-4, 6-3 win to clinch the team's fifth straight win.
  • Hrabalova had not played above the #4 flight all season, but was called upon to play at #3.  She was in a competitive three-set affair, where she trailed 7-6 (5), 4-6, 3-2 when the match was called.
