PAWLEY'S ISLAND, S.C. – The UIC women's golf team shot a 294 in the opening round of the Golfweek Team Challenge to set a new program single-round record Sunday afternoon. As a team, the Flames sit in 10^th place in the 20-team field while Brooke Beyer sits tied for 15^th on the individual leaderboard.
 
"We had a really good overall team effort," said head coach Mat Blair. "Brooke had a really solid round to set the tone for the team. Grace really followed up with a strong round and Dasa played well down the stretch in UIC debut to pull her round back around. Chaewon hit the ball really well as a freshman making her collegiate debut, shooting 4-over despite having four 3-putts. It's really nice when we can do these type of things as a collective group and be in the mix."
 
The 294 the Flames shot is two strokes better than the previous single-round team record of 296, which UIC shot in both the second and third rounds of the 2021 Golfweek Spring Invitational.
 
Brooke Beyer shot an even-par 71 in the opening around. The senior posted a 1-under front nine after getting a birdie putt to fall on the Par 4 fifth hole. Beyer would drop a pair of shots on the back nine before getting another birdie putt to fall on the 17^th.
 
Grace Szklarek and Dasa Urbankova posted identical rounds of 74 (+3). Szklarek posted a 1-under front nine with a birdie on the ninth while Urbankova, a graduate transfer making her UIC debut, tallied a pair of birdies en route to her opening-round 74.
 
Fellow UIC newcomer Chaewon Jeong fired a 75 in her collegiate debut. The freshman from Seoul, South Korea picked up her first collegiate birdie on the 16^th hole.
 
Megan Tang fired a 76 in her first round of the year after opening with a 36 (+1) on the front nine.
 
The Flames will be back in action on Monday, Sept. 12, with the second round of competition.
