EAST LANSING, Mich. (Oct. 14, 2023) – Competing against many of the top Division 1 tennis student-athletes in the Midwest, three UIC women's tennis student-athletes finished action at the ITA Midwest Regional. The Flames were one of 23 programs competing at regional, held on the campus of Michigan State.

"We knew going to this event was going to be a challenge. This competition features some of the best players of the Midwest and we had the opportunity to compete and get better. With our fall season completed, we look forward to preparing for our championship season this spring."
 
ITA MIDWEST REGIONAL RECAP

• In the singles qualifying tournament, Mayu Ushio (Yamaguchi, Japan Miami (Ohio) won her first match 6-2, 6-4 before bowing out in the Round of 32 to Illinois' Violeta Martinez.
• In her lone singles qualifying match, Tamara Malazonia (Birmingham, United Kingdom St. Paul's School for Girls) dropped a 6-3, 6-2 contest against Kida Ferrari from Illinois.
• Agnes Gustafsson (Paris, France Akademi Båstad Gymnasium, Sweden), the lone Flame to compete in the singles main tournament, lost 6-2, 6-1 in her Round of 64 match.
• UIC's doubles team of Gustafsson and Ushio had a valiant effort in their first round competition, but ultimately fell 8-6 to Michigan State's pair of Natalie Stasny and Matilde Morais.

• The ITA Midwest Regional is the final event for the women's tennis program for the fall season. The Flames will be off until January when they begin their championship season.
