SPRINGFIELD, Mo (Oct. 8, 2023) – The UIC women's tennis team finished play Sunday at the 2023 Missouri Valley Conference Individual Championships.
Mayu Ushio (Yamaguchi, Japan Miami (Ohio) led the way for the Flames with a second-place finish in the No. 4 singles flight, while two other individuals and one doubles team placed in the top-three in their respective flights.

"It was a great weekend of competition for our program. We had chances to win on all seven of our singles draws and our three doubles draws. We look forward to facing off against these programs again during the spring season while competing for the conference title."
MVC INDIVIDUAL CHAMPIONSHIPS RECAP
- Ushio placed second in the No. 4 singles flight, falling in the Championship to Murray State's Emma Honore 6-0, 6-2. This is the second tournament in a row Ushio has advanced to the championship match. The junior transfer won her flight at the Redbird Invitational last week.
- Zara Ryan (Dublin, Ireland Utah State) defeated Valparaiso's Jolene Fernandes 6-5, 6-0 to clinch third-place in the No. 6 singles flight. Ryan finished the three-day tournament with a 2-1 record.
- Paula Rodriguez Gregoris (Canary Islands, Spain International School of Berne) continued her strong start to the fall season, placing third in the No. 7 singles flight after defeating Missouri State's Lisa Muehlbauer 6-2, 6-0. This is her second top-three finish this fall; she won her flight at No. 7 singles at the Redbird Invitational.
- UIC's No. 2 doubles team of Camille Belberka (Saint-Denis-lès-Bourg, France Seward County Community College (Kan.) and Tamara Malazonia (Birmingham, United Kingdom St. Paul's School for Girls) defeated Belmont's doubles team 8-1 to finish in third place. The pair has placed in the top-three in both of its competitions this fall.
