Softball Falls in Saturday Contests at the USF Invitational

UIC took on #12 Tennessee and USF at the USF Softball Stadium.

TAMPA BAY, FLA. – The UIC softball team (0-12) completed their second day at the USF Invitational falling to #12 Tennessee (10-1), 12-0 and the Bulls (6-9), 7-3 late Saturday.

#12 TENNESSEE
  • Junior Anna Walker landed the Flames first hit of the game in the first inning against the Vols, getting a single to break through the left side of the field. She currently leads the Flames in this season with nine hits.
  • Sophomore Hailey Cowing also hit a single in the game against the twelth-ranked team in the nation, clearing the ball to right center to begin in the fifth inning. Cowing is tied for third in batting average this season for UIC, batting .250.
  • Senior Christina Toniolo started the game in the circle for the Flames. She threw 4.1 innings, struck out one and walked five. Junior Miranda Gomez completed the fourth inning for the Flames, forcing a fielder's choice and a strikeout to end the inning.
USF
  • The game was at a deadlock heading into the third inning. The Flames scored first behind heads-up base running from freshman Tessa Altevers-Harris who scored on a fielder's choice.
  • That was followed by senior Carlee Jo Clark followed up by hitting a double down the line to score Walker and redshirt senior Maica Ingles to give the Flames an early 3-0 lead. 
  • Clark pitched 5.1 innings in the circle for the Flames, striking out four and walking five.
  • Gomez completed the fifth inning for her second straight relief appearance Saturday. She got the Flames out of the sixth inning allowing no hits.
The Flames conclude their time at in Tampa Bay Sunday morning when they take on the #12 Volunteers once again. The first pitch is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. ET.
