ST. LOUIS – The Missouri Valley Conference named UIC junior
Agnes Gustafsson its Singles Player of the Week Wednesday.
The recognition comes after Gustafsson's thrilling three-set victory Sunday against the 2022 MVC Player of the Year, Olivia Czerwonka. After falling 3-6 in the opening set, Gustafsson won the second set 7-6 (7-5) and set three 6-3 to win at No. 1 singles. The junior's victory was part of UIC's dominating afternoon in singles competition, as the Flames won five of the six matches over the Beacons.
This is the second time this season the Paris, France-native has been named MVC Singles Player of the Week. The league recognized Gustafsson the week on Jan. 24 after she earned UIC's first-ever victory over a Power-5 opponent's number one singles player, taking down Notre Dame's Page Freeman in three sets, 1-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Gustafsson and the Flames will be back in action Friday as UIC hosts Murray State at the XS Tennis Center. The Flames travel to Nashville Sunday to face Belmont. Both matches begin at 10 a.m.
