Baseball Earns Historic Victory Friday

Flames Take Down Indiana State for First Missouri Valley Conference Win

CHICAGO – The UIC baseball team opened a three-game set Friday afternoon, as it welcomed Indiana State to Curtis Granderson Stadium. The series will serve as UIC's first-ever Missouri Valley Conference series played at home in Chicago.

  • The Sycamores jumped out to an early lead on a windy Chicago afternoon, as Randal Diaz launched a two-run home run to left-center field to put Indiana State up 2-0.
  • The Flames would answer in their first at-bat of the game, as Cole Conn opened the scoring for UIC with an RBI double to deep center field.

  • Charlie Szykowny would give UIC the lead the very next batter, as his fifth home run of the season to left center gave the Flames a 3-2 advantage.

  • After the Sycamores tallied the tying run in the top of the second inning, the Flames once again answered, this time from an AJ Henkle two-RBI double to put UIC back on top 5-3.

  • Freshman Brandon Bak had a strong fifth start of the season, going six innings, striking out six and allowing just three runs.

  • The Sycamores got a jolt in the top half of the seventh, as Grant Magill blasted a two-run home run on the first pitch he saw from Zak Gould, tying the game at 5-5.
  • Ryan Nagelbach re-captured the lead for UIC with a solo shot off the center field batter's eye, putting the Flames back ahead 6-5.

  • Following a 2-RBI double from Cole Conn, Charlie Szykowny crushed his second home run of the day to right field, putting the Flames firmly in front at 10-5.

  • The Sycamores would add two runs of their own in the top of the eighth, but the Flames were able to hold on to earn their first-ever Missouri Valley Conference victory by a final score of 10-7.

Game two of the series, originally scheduled for Saturday, has been postponed due to forecasted inclement weather in the Chicago area. The game will be made up as part of a double-header this Sunday, April 2, beginning at noon CT at Curtis Granderson Stadium.
