Baseball Earns First Road Missouri Valley Win Friday

Flames Topple Racers as Bak Earns First Victory

MURRAY, Ky. – The UIC baseball team opened a three-game series against Murray State Friday evening, as the two teams met for the first time in each program's history.

  • The Racers opened the scoring in the home half of the first inning, as an RBI single put Murray State ahead 1-0 early.
  • The Flames had a chance to answer back with two outs and the bases loaded in the top of the third, but a foul pop out from Charlie Szykowny ended the threat.
  • UIC would finally break through on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth inning, as an RBI groundout from Rayth Petersen tied the game, and Bobby Grimes would bring home the eventual winning run after reaching on a fielding error, bringing the score to 2-1.
  • Charlie Szykowny continued his recent hot streak, tallying his team-leading 25th RBI on a single in the top of the seventh.
  • The Flames would add three more runs in the top of the eighth, and that would be more than enough for freshman Brandon Bak, who earned his first collegiate victory on the mound, going seven and two thirds innings and allowing just one run.
  • Tyler Ingram came in to close out the game, allowing just one hit and no runs in an inning and a third.

The win serves as another historic victory for the Flames, as it is the first Missouri Valley Conference victory for the Flames on the road. UIC and Murray State will continue the series on Saturday, as game two is set for a 2:00 p.m. CT first pitch from Johnny Reagan Field. The game will not be broadcasted live, but live stats are available at UICFlames.com.
