Santiago Walks It Off Against Butler in Extras

Flames Earn Third Extra Innings Win of the Season

CHICAGO – The UIC softball team battled it out against Butler Wednesday night and walked away victorious in eight innings, 5-4 behind a walk-off base hit from sophomore Jojo Santiago.

COMMENT FROM SOPHOMORE JOJO SANTIAGO
"It was a crazy feeling; you are kind of hyped and you must calm yourself down in those moments. Everybody had each other's backs today and everyone had belief that we are going to get it done in the box and that's the best feeling in the world."
  • Senior Alannah Cran got the Flames on the board when her second hit of the game scored sophomore Hailey Cowing and freshman Tess Altevers Harris.
  • Cran was later scored on a base hit down the middle from junior Anna Walker to give the Flames a two-run lead entering the fourth.
  • Senior Christina Toniolo started in the circle for the Flames. She finished 4.0 innings, striking out three and only walking one batter.
  • After the Bulldogs tied it in the fourth, UIC regained the lead behind a base hit off the bat of Larissa Ortiz in the fifth, scoring Cran.
  • In her 20th relief appearance of the season, junior Miranda Gomez pitched 4.0 innings for the Flames, striking out one and walking one.
  • Entering its eighth extra innings game of the season , the Flames thwarted the Bulldogs from taking the lead behind the defense of Cran, Walker and junior Larissa Villa at first base.
  • With the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth, Santiago crushed a ball out of reach of Butler's right fielder to score sophomore Grace Fleming to secure the win.
