FULLERTON, Calif. (Feb. 10, 2024) – The UIC softball team (0-4) fell short in back-to-back games, losing to Colorado State (3-1) 11-0 and host Cal State Fullerton (3-0) 8-2 at Anderson Family Field on Day Two of the Easton Classic Saturday.
GAME ONE (11-0, CSU)
- Senior Miranda Gomez (Pico Rivera, Calif./Bishop Amat) made her 2024 debut for UIC at pitcher. Facing the bases loaded in the top of the first, the hurler forced the Rams' Hailey Smith to ground out to junior Jo Jo Santiago (Channahon, Ill./Joliet Catholic Academy) to end the inning.
- After graduate student Carlee Jo Clark (Carol Stream, Ill./Southern Illinois) walked to begin the bottom of the first, senior Larisa Villa (La Habra, Calif./ La Habra) smacked a ball to the left field grass for a base hit, moving Clark to scoring position. Junior Grace Fleming (Long Beach, Calif./Millikan) loaded the bases after being walked, but the Flames weren't able to score any of the baserunners.
- Gomez finished her outing after two innings in the circle, only allowing one run on three hits against eight batters. After graduate student Christina Toniolo (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake South) was pulled after one inning in relief, Clark finished the rest of the game pitching for the Flames, allowing only three hits and one walk in two innings
- Down 9-0 in the bottom of the fourth, Fleming collected her lone hit of the game when she poked a single behind the second baseman.
- UIC's final hit of the game came off the bat of Santiago in the bottom of the fifth, as the junior hit a ball to right field.
GAME TWO (8-2, CSF)
- The Flames struck first against the Titans in the top of the first inning. With Clark and junior Emma Gumont (Warren Ohio/Notre Dame College) in scoring position, Fleming hit a ball to the feet of the Titans' right fielder for the base hit, scoring both runners to give the Flames a 2-0 lead.
- After redshirt junior Alyssa McIntosh (Lancaster, Calif./Lancaster) was pulled midway through the first inning, Clark returned to pitch for the Flames, throwing four innings, striking out two and walking two. McIntosh returned to pitch for the Flames in the bottom of the fifth, finishing the game pitching two innings, throwing two strikeouts and not allowing a single hit.
