Softball Returns to Sunshine State for T-Mobile Tournament

Flames slated to face Colgate, Lafayette and No. 14 Florida this weekend

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (Feb. 22, 2024) – The UIC softball team (1-9) returns to Florida for the second consecutive weekend, this time heading to Gainesville to partake in No. 14 Florida's T-Mobile Tournament from Friday-Sunday. No game will be available to stream at the tournament, but the Flames' game against the host Gators on Sunday will be streamed on radio at FloridaGators.com. Live stats will be available for the entire tournament at UICFlames.com.

SCOUTING COLGATE
  • This will be the first time in 33 years the Flames and Raiders will clash on the diamond. In their lone meeting back on March 21, 1991, UIC defeated Colgate, 5-2 at the Rebel Spring Games in Polk County, Fla.
  • Colgate sports a 3-6 record in the first two weeks of the season with a pair of wins against Bethune-Cookman and a 9-1 victory over fellow MVC member Indiana State on Feb. 10 at the Houston Invitational .
  • Graduate student Adrienne Nardone has had a strong start in the batter's box for Colgate, collecting seven hits and leading the team with six RBI.
 
SCOUTING LAFAYETTE
  • UIC and Lafayette will play for the first time this millennium, having previously met on March 20, 1999, at the Winthrop Invitational. The Flames' bats were on fire that day, as they defeated the Leopards, 17-0.
  • Lafayette is coming off a 2-3 appearance in Tarleton State's Whataburger Invitational last weekend, going 2-0 on Feb. 17 with wins over Buffalo (4-2) and the host Texans (3-0).
  • Freshman Regan Dillon batted .600 at last weekend's tournament and ranks third in the Patriot League in batting average. She collected nine hits spread out over the weekend.
 
SCOUTING FLORIDA
  • This will be the sixth time the Flames and Gators will meet, last having played back in 2003. Florida has won the last four meetings in the series, with UIC's last win over the Gators, a 4-0 decision, coming on March 8, 1997, at the Speedline Invitational.
  • Florida is off to an 8-2 start this season with wins over fellow MVC member Illinois State and fellow Chicagoland school Loyola. The Gators are coming off a 3-0 loss to No. 6 Oklahoma State at home on Monday.
  • Junior Kendra Falby is batting .500 through the first 10 games for the Gators. The 2023 All-SEC Second Team selection leads the team with 19 hits and is second on the team in runs scored (13).
 
LAST TOURNAMENT RECAP: USF'S FONSECA MEMORIAL TOURNAMENT
  • The Flames went 1-4 in Tampa last weekend, collecting their first win of the season on Feb. 12 against Hofstra, a 5-1 victory.
  • Graduate student Christina Toniolo (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake South) pitched her ninth career complete game at UIC. She threw all seven innings, striking out five batters, walking one and allowing just one run.
  • Senior Larisa Villa (La Habra, Calif./La Habra) collected three RBI with a double and a sacrifice fly. Junior Larissa Ortiz (Romeoville, Ill./Wisconsin) drove in the other two UIC runs on a single.
  • Junior Grace Fleming (Long Beach, Calif./Millikan) finished the tournament batting .429, collecting six hits, highlighted by multi-hit games against Hofstra and Power Five opponent Boston College. She leads the Flames with 10 hits this season.
