MURRAY, Ky. (March 16, 2024) – The UIC softball team (8-18, 1-1 MVC) took an early 2-0 lead, but couldn't fend off Murray State (13-14, 1-1 MVC), falling 9-2 on Saturday afternoon at Racer Field in Murray, Ky., squaring the teams' MVC opening-weekend series at a game apiece.

Graduate student
Alannah Cran (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard) went 3-for-3 at the plate with a double, while fellow graduate student

COMMENT FROM HEAD COACH LYNN CURYLO
"We gave this one away today. We need to come back tomorrow with better execution and effort."

GAME RECAP
- With two outs in the first, Cran slapped a ball past the left fielder's reach for a double. In the very next at-bat, Clark took a 2-1 pitch over the centerfield wall for her fourth home run of the season and a 2-0 Flames lead.
- Graduate student Miranda Gomez (Pico Rivera, Calif./Bishop Amat) started in the circle with a quick 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the first. She would pitch 3.2 innings in total, allowing just a single earned run and walking a lone MSU batter.
- The Racers tied the game up with single runs in the second (on a UIC defensive error) and third (on a sacrifice fly ).
- In the top of the fourth, Cran collected her second hit of the game with a single to right field and was soon joined on the basepaths by Clark via MSU's own defensive miscue. Senior Larisa Villa (La Habra, Calif./La Habra) moved the runners along with a timely sacrifice, but the pair were left stranded in scoring position to end the inning.
- Murray State took the lead with five runs in the bottom of the fourth and added insurance tallies in the sixth.
- The Flames tried to respond when Cran reached on an infield single in the fifth and junior Hailey Cowing (Torrance, Calif./West Torrance) did likewise on a walk in the seventh, but UIC was unable to cash in on either opportunity.
Â
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
- Cran is batting a perfect 1.000 against Murray State through the first two games of the weekend series, having gone 5-for-5 with two doubles and three singles.
- Now with four home runs in the season, Clark is tied for fourth in the MVC.
- After splitting the first two games, the all-time series is now also tied 2-2.
