MURRAY, Ky. (March 17, 2024) – The UIC softball team (8-19, 1-2 MVC) fell 6-0 in the series finale against Murray State (14-14, 2-1 MVC) at Racer Field in Murray, Ky. Sunday afternoon. The Flames left eight runners on the base path in Sunday's loss.
Senior
Larisa Villa (La Habra, Calif./La Habra), junior
Hailey Cowing (Torrance, Calif./West Torrance) and freshman
Cameran Rios (Effingham, Ill./St. Anthony) each had multi-hit games for the Flames, with all three batting two-for-three from the plate. Graduate student
Christina Toniolo (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake South) struck out six batters in her complete-game pitching effort.
COMMENT FROM HEAD COACH LYN CURYLO
"Our team needs to lean 100 percent into having a championship mindset regardless of the situation. It is evident that we are not doing this consistently, considering the team that showed up to play on Friday was not the same team that showed up today."
GAME RECAP
- After Murray State jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first, UIC got its first hit of the game in the top of the second off the bat of Cowing, when she took a 2-2 pitch to the right field grass. She was moved all the way to third base behind sacrifice bunts from Villa and freshman Siena Stickney (Mission Viejo, Calif.) but was left stranded.
- Following a rough first inning, Toniolo settled in the circle, only allowing one hit over the next three innings of work.
- MSU increased its lead to 6-0 in the bottom of the third off a passed ball.
- In the top of the fourth, Cowing collected her second hit of the game when she poked the ball past the middle infielders for a single. Two pitches later, Villa smacked the ball to right field to give the Flames two runners on with two outs, but a groundout from Stickney ended the inning.
- Pinch hitting in the fifth, junior Larissa Ortiz (Romeoville, Ill./Wisconsin) took the first pitch she saw to centerfield for a single. After a Rios single put two runners on for the Flames, back-to-back putouts by MSU left both runners stranded on base.
- Toniolo closed her outing in the bottom of the sixth with her sixth and final strikeout of the game to end the inning.
- In the top of the seventh, with a runner on first and one, the Flames hit into a double play to end the game.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
- After her two-hit performance, Villa broke her career-high for hits in a season (20).
- Rios has four multi-hit games this season. The freshman has 15 hits in her first season at UIC.
- Following Sunday's victory, Murray State has a 3-2 lead over UIC in the overall series.
